Nominated for Toy of the Year 2020, category 6 & 7 years
The jury’s opinion:
You simply have to have this. The perfect match between LEGO and Nintendo! Nostalgia for the parents, fun for the children. Gets kids off the screen and towards toys. What you normally do on the screen, you can now recreate with this set. It looks nice and the sound effects are great. This is an entry-level set, but can be significantly expanded. You can use the accompanying app, but you don’t have to.
Developmental psychologist’s explanation:
The Super Mario set combines Lego building with the digital gaming options of Nintendo. Children can create a course with the Lego blocks (and keep changing and/or expanding them). The main character is the well-known Mario of computer games, who has all kinds of possibilities, including two (mini) screens with which he can display all kinds of (typical Mario) facial expressions and show how many coins he has earned. He can talk and make funny sounds, which increases the hilarity of the game.
Mario must go through the course and perform all kinds of tasks at various ‘stations’ to earn coins. Mario has all kinds of sensors that allow him to interact with Lego parts where commands must be carried out and determine how well the command is carried out. Super Mario contains elements of construction toys and action games and requires some dexterity (fine motor skills). A fun way to get the kids away from their screens and back to having fun with physical toys. Fun to play together and see who earns the most points.
